Jackson the snow baby At long last, David scored the coup of the season: booking the Boat House -- a high-demand rental property -- right on the shores of Serene Lake. On paper it seemed perfect! But alas, reality doesn't always live up to the Web site. The bedrooms were tiny, the main bathroom was adjacent to the kitchen in a bizarre layout choice, and steep stairs meant keeping a close eye on the kids was a must. We shared quarters with Dave's parents; John and Adele (Dave's uncle and aunt); Rod and Suzanne (Dave's cousins) and their two little ones, Emma and Katence; and latecomers Gray and Laura, who joined us for a truncated weekend. The rest of Dave's immediate family found lodging in the Ice Lakes house, a Holland family favorite just a few houses away.

Jackson's first "conscious" Tahoe trip was a success. At first, he refused to put his feet down into the snow...until he decided it tasted good, at which point he became a snow-scarfing maniac. We bundled him up and schlepped him via backpack on hikes across the frozen lake, plopped him into a sled for his first downhill experiences, and taught him how to throw snowballs at trees. Back at the cabin, the kids enjoyed playing together and watching "The Jungle Book" on videotape, while we shared community meals between the two cabins.

The low-key long weekend featured not much skiing, although everyone got out for at least a run or two. In recent years, the Tahoe getaway has become less about action sports and more about family -- and, at least until Jackson is ready to mount up on his own snowboard, that's been just fine with us.
